Openers

An Encino homeowner was turning his garage into a training space, and the opener hanging from the ceiling was in his way. We pulled the motor, rail and brackets and moved the opener to the wall next to the door.
The problem
He's a tall homeowner, and with gym equipment going in, a motor and rail down the middle of the ceiling cut into the headroom he needed for lifting and pull-ups.
What we did
- Took down the ceiling opener with its rail and all of the old mounting hardware.
- Installed a wall-mount opener beside the door, set up from scratch.
The result
The ceiling over his training area is open, with the opener now on the wall beside the door.
Why the opener had to come off the ceiling
A standard opener sits roughly in the middle of the garage, with a rail running from the motor to the top of the door. That's the same zone where a rack, a pull-up bar or an overhead press needs clearance. For a tall lifter, it's the first thing in the way.
A wall-mount opener drives the door from the side by turning the torsion bar above the opening, so there's no motor or rail overhead at all.
Setting up a garage gym in Encino
Plenty of Valley homeowners use the garage for more than cars. If you're planning a gym, it helps to think about the door before the equipment goes in:
- Leave room for the door and its tracks, which still sit overhead when the door is open
- Keep the safety sensors at the bottom of the tracks clear so the door will close
- Don't anchor bands or straps to the springs, tracks or torsion bar
Questions about this job
What's needed for a wall-mount opener?
A torsion spring system above the door, free wall space at one end of the torsion bar, and power close by. We check all three before recommending one.
Is a wall-mount opener quieter?
Usually, yes. There's no chain or belt running along a ceiling rail, which is where most opener noise comes from.
Do you install wall-mount openers outside Encino?
Yes. We work across the San Fernando Valley and LA County. Call and we'll check whether your door is a fit.
